Board columns

Boards combine Tapestry’s task status with your own workflow. The built-in columns follow dependencies and completion. Custom columns let you say which stage a task is in.

Where a card appears

Each task appears in one column on a board:

Column Tasks shown here
Done Completed tasks, including tasks that still have a custom column’s label.
Custom column Open tasks with that column’s label. If several column labels match, the first matching column in the board’s order wins.
Ready Remaining open tasks with no visible unfinished prerequisites and no future snooze date.
Waiting Remaining open tasks that are blocked or snoozed.

A task in doing can still be blocked. Its card shows that status, and putting it in a custom column doesn’t complete its prerequisites or change its snooze date.

For example, Paint the dining room waits on Buy paint. Completing Buy paint moves the painting task from Waiting to Ready automatically, unless it already belongs in a custom column.

Add a custom column

In the board’s Settings, click Add column. Pick an existing label, choose a suggested stage, or type a name and click Add. Use the up and down arrows to set the order, then Save.

Creating a column creates its label in each included workspace you can edit, or uses the matching label already there. Assign that label to an open task anywhere in Tapestry and it appears in the column. You can also drag the task into the column to apply the label.

If you can only view a workspace, you can use an existing label there, but creating a missing label needs someone with editing access.

What moving a card does

Move What changes
To a custom column Applies its label and removes labels belonging to the board’s other custom columns. Other task labels stay.
To Ready Removes the board’s custom column labels. The task must already be unblocked and unsnoozed.
To Waiting Removes the board’s custom column labels. The task must already be blocked or snoozed.
To Done Completes the task and keeps its labels.
Out of Done Reopens the task and applies the destination’s rules above.

If a task can’t move to Ready, use View task to inspect its prerequisites or snooze date. If it’s ready now and you want to postpone it, use Add snooze date to put it in Waiting.

Moves offer Undo. If someone has edited the task since your move, Tapestry may ask you to open the task and make the change yourself.

Reordering cards within a column isn’t saved. Use custom columns to track stages, rather than card position to record priority.

Rename, hide, or remove columns

Renaming a custom column changes its heading. It keeps using the same workspace labels; it doesn’t rename those labels or change tasks.

Unchecking Waiting, Ready, or Done hides that column and its cards from this board. It doesn’t move them to another column.

Removing a custom column leaves its labels on the tasks. Those tasks appear in another matching custom column, or return to Ready or Waiting according to their status. Completed tasks stay in Done.
